The Theme of Solidarity in the Novels "The Seventh Cross" (Das siebte Kreuz) by Anna Seghers and "Spark of Life" (Der Funke Leben) by Erich Maria Remarque

The presented thesis deals with the topic of the war and concentration camps in the novels Das siebte Kreuz (in English The seventh Cross) by Anna Seghers and Der Funke Leben (in English Spark of Life) by Erich Maria Remarque with a special focus on the topic of solidarity. At first, the thesis examines the literary-historical context, specifically German literature in the time of fascism and the reflection of Nazi tyranny in German literature. The thesis further examines the lives of both authors and analyses their works in terms of circumstances of their origin, plot, the characteristics of the characters, the individual motives of the novels and the topic of solidarity. The solidarity in the novels is the main theme of this thesis and on the basis of that the two works are compared. Using specific excerpts from both novels, the thesis analyses the theme of solidarity in relation to the individual characters and the time-space of the plot. The last part of this thesis deals with the didactic potential of these publications. "Resistance Movement in the Region of Plzeň- North during the Second World War "

This diploma thesis briefly describes the situation in the region of Plzeň throughout the period between the signature of the Munich Agreement and the end of the Second World War in the background of the international events and with special emphasis on everyday life. It also monitors the course of events in the field of domestic resistance and its cooperation with the foreign representatives; it provides a list of resistance movement organizations operating in the region of Plzeň. The majority of the thesis deals with the resistance movement in the district of Nýřany, which has been a part of the Plzeň - North district since 1960. This part of the thesis describes not only the organized resistance movement (the communist and the democratic one) but also the spontaneous actions performed by the individuals. The thesis depicts the story of several people who participated in the resistance movement against the Nazis and whose lives were deeply affected by the Nazi persecution. The aim of the thesis is to point out the domestic resistance situation in the background of the above-mentioned stories in the industrial area of Nýřany.

II Title History interpretation in Fred Wander's literary works Abstract The topic of this diploma thesis is an interpretation of events during the Second World War in Fred Wander's literary work, an important representative of German written literature in the past century. The first chapter presents Fred Wander's life and work and is based on Wander's own autobiography and interviews. The following chapters are dedicated to individual analysis of his three writings: Der siebente Brunnen, Ein Zimmer in Paris and Hotel Baalbek. Wander especially focuses on mediating concrete personal life stories during that epoch. Hotel Haalbek work captures a situation during the first years of the war in the southern France. Der siebente Brunnen describes prisoners' lives in a concentration camp. Wander dedicates Ein Zimmer in Paris work to the topic of how to cope with war experience. The main target of this diploma thesis is about an interpretation of selected themes which are crucial for the mentioned works. Slovak Germans during the Second World War

The master thesis focuses on German population living in Slovakia during the Second World War. Moreover, it examines the way the status of Germans was changing after Slovak autonomy had been established and which role did Deutsche Partei led by Franz Karmasin play in this process. The political party attempted to form collective identity of Carpathian Germans and have control of the entire German social life. The thesis analyzes on political, economical and cultural level how the party suceeded in fulfilling this ambitious purpose or influencing Germans and getting sympathy. Futher, it deals with the wartime aftermaths, retributive justice and coming to terms with the past.

The Portrayal of the Female Experience of the Second World War in Sarah Waters's The Night Watch

The diploma thesis is concerned with the portrayal of the female experience with the Second World War in The Night Watch (2006) by contemporary British writer Sarah Waters. The theoretical part outlines the socio-historical background of the novel with particular attention to the female experience of the Second World War in various fields, such as their family lives, job opportunities, and everyday life during the Blitz. Special attention is also given to the description of the female experience with abortion during the war and the lifestyles of female homosexuals in that historical period. The thesis further presents the theoretical delimitation of the neo-historical genre, of which the novel is a representative, and briefly introduces the novel in the context of Sarah Waters's other works in order to establish the basis for the analysis. The practical part of the thesis relies on the theoretical part and examines how the fictional portrayal of the female experience corresponds with the outlined reality. Simultaneously, the work considers how Waters uses the Second World War in her fictional story and which elements she chooses to highlight. Changing interpretation of the role of the communist resistence at the Prague uprising

The Prague uprising signified the end of the Second World War in Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. As the Soviet and American armies progressed through the country towards Prague and the war was apparently soon to come to an end, Czechoslovaks themselves wanted to take part in the resistance against the Nazi oppression. The uprising was also a turning point for the succesful liberation of Prague. After the Czechoslovak communist party seized power in February 1948, the way the public perceived the uprising had to be changed to fit the party's interpretation, purposely overlooking the contribution of any non-communist resistence. This ideologically suitable interpretation had to be accepted even by the main leader of the uprising. The aforementioned interpretation can still be seen in historiographic books, even those published after the Velvet Revolution. Interpretation of the same event with the targeted use of words and phrases allows for different sounds and thus influences the reader. Targeted use of historical events can achieve the long-term prevalence of rumors, the refutation of which is a necessity and the work of historians. Radio broadcasting of the Czechoslovak government in exile and its instrumentalisation of the Holocaust in 1939-1945

My master's thesis, entitled "The Radio Broadcasting of the Czechoslovakian Government-in- Exile and instrumentalization of the Holocaust in 1939-1945" explores the instrumentalization of the Holocaust when it comes to radio broadcasting by the Czechoslovakian government-in- exile in London during World War II. My thesis deals with exile governments and the development of the Czechoslovakian government-in-exile in London until its recognition by world powers. The text also rests on the operation and formation of radio broadcasts, as well as on the use of propaganda during World War II. The most important part of this thesis is chapter four, where I examine the radio broadcasts of politicians-in-exile on the Holocaust. It is here that I scrutinize primary sources ascertained from the Czech Radio Archive. In conclusion, I summarize the answers to the research questions asked.
